The Nigerian musician died in 1997 at 58. He released 77 albums over his career! His music combined the modern with the traditional African rhythms and was coined 'Afrobeat'. He inspired James Brown and Bootsy Collins as well as many of today's hip hop stars like The Roots and Blackalicious.
He also fought for the rights of his people at a time when they were being heavily controlled by a military regime. He appeared in court over 350 times and was harrassed, beaten and jailed by that regime as he fought for the under-priveleged.

But his career was coloured by conflict, controversy and gossip, which implicated him in sorcery, drugs-trafficking, political intrigue and more. From a precocious guitar-playing street kid in Kinshasa to cultural figurehead of one of the largest countries in Africa, Franco was unique.
